Monthly 5. What I'm Enjoying in October

Drinking: Pumpkin Ale - Buffalo Bills  Always a great choice, especially this time of year.  Carving out time to pick some up on my way home tonight.
-

Watching: Season 2 - Fringe.   This is a quirky but fantastic Sci-Fi series focusing on strange events related to crossover between ours and an alternate universe.  The 2nd Season focuses on a question of morality that one father had to face.  I might have done the same.  Great stuff.

Reading: The Training Ground - by Martin Dugard.  I just started reading this book, but I am already hooked.  It is the true account of the interactions and training several famous Civil War military figures had during the Mexican War, fought a dozen years earlier.

Listening to: Up From Below - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.  Terrific Indie/Folk Rock from the LA based group.  Plus, if there is a catchier tune out there right now than Home I definitely want to hear it.

Visiting: Men's Health Online.  I was a long time subscriber before becoming a father.  That's when many expenses deemed unnecessary were eliminated.  But now, after clicking through on a number of their recent Tweets, I have started to once again read by visiting the site directly.  There is just so much valuable information for men.

How about you readers?  What are you enjoying this month?

Mickey loves that beer!

I've been enjoying a lot of cold medicine, unfortunately. :)

I like posts like this. Gives me some good ideas.

Drinking: PG Tips tea. I'm becoming a tea drinker for the first time in my life. Still trying to perfect the perfect cup of tea.

Watching: We just discovered Breaking Bad via Netflix. I didn't think I'd like it, but was hooked in the first episode. Also watching The Middle, a hilarious family sitcom.

Reading: Just started The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins. I need ammo against the creationists.

Listening: While in England, I discovered a band called Little Man Tate. They broke up a few years ago, but their frontman, Jon Windle, has just released his solo debut. Fun, guitar-based Britpop.

I love when you do these...

* Drinking: This week it's Sam Adams Octoberfest but last week in Oregon I had lots of great beers...11 months man, 11 months.

* Watching: On my second go-round with The Wire. This time watching w/ my wife. My all-time favorite show.

* Reading: Right now, a book for Book Dads. A YA book about Burmese refugees from Mitali Perkins. Brilliant writer.

* Listening: Lots of Flogging Molly and Irish punk these days. Tessa enjoys rocking out to it as well.

I'm afraid I've fallen hard for Stone IPA. I've been drinking it for a couple years now and haven't had a taste for anything else. Every time I open one, it's like the first time all over again.

Ain't got the Tee Vee, but I always watch The Office and 30 Rock on Hulu. Like everyone else in the world. Also, I sometimes guiltily enjoy Dancing with the Stars over my wife's shoulder. Watched District 9 last night with absolutely no expectations (wife picked it) and it blew me away. Reminded me of a bunch of my faves from back in the day--Buckaroo Banzai, Road Warrior, Enemy Mine (not really a fave, but pretty good),and Robocop.

I've been reading short stories, biding my time before plunging into my next book. Faulkner, Cheever, Updike, Carver, Flannery O'Connor, Joyce Carol Oates...hmm, it seems like I only like American writers. David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest is still staring me down, but I don't think I'm ready yet.

I need new music. Pandora is not providing me with anything interesting. Mostly I've been running the iPod on shuffle. Last two albums I listened to all the way through (and enjoyed for the millionth time) were Outkast-- Speakerboxx/Love Below, and The Smiths--Louder than Bombs. Like I said, time for some new tunes.

Update. Just bought some Red Hook Long Hammer IPA (from your neck of the woods). It's very good, but not as good as Stone.

I'm enjoying Pepsi, Ethiopian food, the circus, and the book Scaredy Squirrel (for my 3yo)

I Loooooove Pumpkin beer. It isn't fall until I've had one.

I want that pumpkin ale just for the packaging. And the book looks interesting, that might make a good Christimas gift for a couple of men in my family. Thanks!

Fringe is an excellent show. S3 is even better than S2.

Wow! You just listed 4 things I've never had, listened to or read. :-) I've read a lot about the war with Mexico so The Training Ground is one I'd probably enjoy.

The Training Ground sounds great--I'll have to look it up. I have read a couple of stories on the Mexican-American war, and enjoyed seeing all the future stars interact.

The training ground looks interesting. I just read historical fiction book about US Grant and they talked about the Mexican war a lot.

@Mighty M - Hope you are feeling better.

@Phil - I drink tea every night too. Green tea = Good stuff.

@Chris - Love me some Sam Adams Octoberfest. And The Wire has to be one of the greatest shows EVER.

@Beta Dad - As I mentioned, I have to try the Stone beers. Sound great. Plus, District 9 was an awesome movie. I listen to LAST.FM a lot too. Similar to Pandora. ALSO KEXP.org Seattle Public Music Radio. So awesome.

@Ordinary Dad - Will have to check out Scardy Squirrel. Lukas is into squirrel stories right now.

@Kat - Yes, this pumpkin ale is treating me right.

@Lady Mamma - I try to drink with the seasons here.

@Scifi - That is good to hear.

@Keith - I dig books like that. So much to learn.

@Slamdunk - Yes, the Mexican War gets little press, but it involved a lot of characters that would go on to become well known.

@William - What book was that? I love historical war fiction.

* Drinking: Hot apple cider from one of the local orchards - Bellewood Acres. I love it.

* Watching: Hell's Kitchen. A total guilty pleasure, but my husband and I have so much fun watching it together and snarking.

* Reading: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Easy fluff.

* Listening: Lately I'm mostly listening to the Phineas and Ferb soundtrack with my four year old.

* Visiting: Amazon.com - shopping for my first DSLR and figuring out what I want!

I am a fan of Men's Health, but the book you mentioned is really what caught my eye. I think that I'll have to pick up a copy.

Didn't we think about doing a beer exchange at one time? Whatever happened with that? I don't know how legal it is to send beer via UPS!?

Also, I'm assuming you watch Fringe on your computer or have the complete season on DVD? I know you're anti-cable...

I love Fringe. I am watching the current season every Thursday night. I doubt if it lives a lot long though much like many shows I like.

Pumpkin Ale is God's Nectar. My personal favorite this year has been Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale.
